Often, issues like crooked teeth, protruding bites, underbites, or over spaced teeth ruin our smile aesthetics.

If you find yourself hiding your smile because the teeth are crooked or overcrowded, then you might need orthodontic treatment.

Dr. Raphael Putrus at All About Orthodontics is proud to provide you with a truly convenient and comfortable way of aligning teeth to the proper position. We want you to smile again with confidence without people noticing you are undergoing orthodontic treatment.

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that realigns misaligned teeth using aligners made from a clear thermoplastic called SmartTrack. The biggest selling point and the reason Invisalign aligners have become so popular is that they are clear. Therefore, your oral aesthetics will still be maintained while undergoing treatment.

Benefits of Invisalign

If you are wondering why you should choose Invisalign treatment over other options like metal braces, then you need to know about the benefits of Invisalign and what it provides to our Warren & Southgate community.

Clear and Removable

First, this teeth straightening system features translucent aligners that can be taken out of the mouth at any time. You can remove the aligner trays whenever you are eating or brushing and flossing your teeth.

Comfortable and Customized

Dr. Raphael R. Putrus will custom-fabricate the aligner trays so that they work just for your mouth. There are no wires that irritate the gums and cheeks.

Virtually Invisible

The clear aligners are not easily visible to other people. Unless you look at the teeth very closely, you would not know if someone is using aligners to straighten their teeth.

Improved Oral Hygiene

Since you are able to take out the aligners during your oral hygiene routine, it makes it easier and more convenient to clean your teeth and gums. You just remove the trays and brush and floss your teeth as usual to sweep out biofilm, bacteria, and leftovers.

Are You a Candidate for Invisalign?

While Invisalign will realign teeth to the correct position, it may not work well for some people. If you have a malocclusion issue that needs the jawbone to be moved, such as a severe underbite or overbite, then Invisalign may not be recommended. It is appropriate for mild to moderate cases of misalignment.

It is considered ideal for older teens as well as adults because their jaws have fully grown, and they can show dedication to wearing the aligners. Patients who have had braces before and find their teeth have misaligned again may this time around consider Invisalign.

Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces

Comparing traditional braces and Invisalign can provide you with insights as to why you should opt for one over the other. Invisalign is almost invisible, while wire braces can be seen in the mouth. As such, Invisalign works inconspicuously, but braces and wires can easily be noticed by other people.

Further, Invisalign is intended for mild to moderate misalign or malocclusion issues, while traditional metal braces, because they are crafted from metal, can work on not only mild but also tough and severe cases. Invisalign delivers results within a period of nine to 18 months, with some people wearing the aligners for up to 24 months. On the other hand, duration for traditional braces can go up to 36 months.

Invisalign Process and Timeline

•  First, you must visit our office for a consultation. Our orthodontist, Dr. Raphael R. Putrus, will speak with you regarding your candidacy for Invisalign.
•  Examining your mouth and obtaining imaging solutions like digital x-rays, digital photos, and 3D scans shows the extent of misalignment. Severe cases may require traditional metal braces, since they are sturdier than the clear thermoplastic material for Invisalign.
•  We use the details from the imaging solutions to create a digital treatment plan, mapping out the precise movements of the teeth.
•  Then, we create custom-fitting trays from the impressions and digital images we obtain. Our orthodontist will fit the first tray and provide instructions on how you will be fitting the next trays in the series at home.
•  To get results within the stipulated timeframe, you have to wear the aligners 20 to 22 hours daily.
•  After two weeks, you can switch the aligners to the next series unless our orthodontist advises otherwise.

FAQs About Invisalign

If you are seeking to get your teeth straightened, you probably have some questions or concerns. Here are some FAQs about Invisalign that most patients present to us.

How long does the treatment take?

It can last up to 24 months to see results. On average, the treatment duration takes around nine to 18 months.

Can I eat and drink normally with Invisalign?

There are no restrictions with diet when it comes to Invisalign. You usually remove the aligners when eating, so there is nothing to worry about.

Is Invisalign painful?

Some slight discomfort may arise in the first days of putting on your new set of trays. This is actually a good indicator that the trays are working to shift your teeth. After a couple of days, the slight feeling of pressure will go away.

How often do I need to wear the aligners?

The duration of wearing Invisalign depends on a case-by-case basis. However, on average, patients must wear their aligners for at least 22 hours per day for effective alignment. Patients are advised to only remove them when eating, brushing, or flossing.

Invisalign Care and Maintenance

Proper care of Invisalign aligners ensures that you do not develop dental issues during your treatment. You also ensure they last the treatment duration and are effective at shifting teeth.

Make sure to clean the aligners every day. You can clean them at the same time you are brushing your teeth in the evening or morning. Whenever you take your aligners out, make sure you rinse them before placing them back in the mouth. You can soak them for about 20 minutes before you brush and rinse them. Use warm water, a soft brush, and unscented soap to clean the aligners; avoid toothpaste because it can be abrasive.
