Damon Braces

Gorgeous woman smiling to show off her brilliant teeth after her Damon Braces treatments. One of the first things people notice about your appearance is your smile. If your smile is healthy, you will experience better overall health as well as confidence. Teeth that are crowded, crooked or misshaped will negatively impact your appearance and oral health, and our team at All About Orthodontics, Warren and Southgate MI, doesn't want you to go through that. One of our best treatment options is Damon System Braces.

What Are Damon Braces?

Damon Braces are self-ligating orthodontic appliances that are fitted just like traditional metal braces. The difference is that instead of regularly tightening and adjusting the teeth with brackets, Damon Braces use a slide mechanism that connects wires to brackets, so they move naturally with the teeth as they realign. As a result, not only are Damon Braces more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing than traditional metal braces, but they get excellent results in less time.

Advantages of Damon Braces

Damon System Braces have multiple advantages over traditional metal braces. In terms of appearance, clear brackets make them almost invisible. Damon Braces cause less friction, thus preventing the teeth from eroding and deteriorating. Teeth treated with Damon Braces also have fewer places for bacteria and plaque to grow and develop.

Adults like Damon Braces because they have to come in and see us less often. Damon braces mean you may visit us up to seven fewer visits than people who wear traditional braces. Adults have a busy enough schedule without taking time to visit us - so the fewer visits they have to make, the happier they are, especially when they are straightening their teeth with even fewer visits.

Adults say that Damon braces are better for their teeth for the duration of their orthodontic treatment. Damon Braces don't put as much pressure on an adult's teeth when compared to traditional braces. Adults note that Damon Braces, because of the sliding wires, are more comfortable to wear. Patients report less pain when the braces are adjusted as well. Damon Braces are an excellent option for adults who want to be treated, but who don't want to wear traditional braces.

How Damon Braces Work

Damon Braces are attached to memory wire that connects slide brackets without applying the pressure that is often made by traditional elastics. They are then set up to move your teeth, tightening them over time gradually. This alternative orthodontic method uses less force than traditional ceramic braces, which usually have us provide additional treatments like extractions and palatal expanders.

Who Can Benefit from Damon Braces?

Many adults can benefit from braces because their teeth need to be appropriately spaced or straightened. You may also need braces because you have problems with your bite. People with an overbite have their top teeth that reach too far over their lower teeth. When you bite down, do your lower teeth end up in front of your upper teeth? If you have this issue, then you may have an underbite. Your teeth may not match when you bite down, and that's called a crossbite. Damon Braces can fix all of these issues.

Damon Braces vs. Traditional Braces

While traditional ceramic braces may not be appealing for adults, Damon Braces are a great choice, because they don't look like traditional braces do. When you get traditional braces, you have metal wires and metal brackets - and that's a lot of metal for an adult. Traditional braces use metal wires that are threaded between metal brackets. We straighten your teeth gradually by tightening the wires on your braces. Damon Braces are different. Damon brackets are smaller and thinner, which makes them less likely to be noticed. Damon Braces have wires that move with your teeth, so they don't need to be tightened as often. Many patients think that Damon Braces are more comfortable to wear because of the way the wires slide in and out of the brackets instead of being fixed. Damon Braces also have a transparent version that is even less likely to be noticed than the traditional Damon Braces. In fact, Damon's clear braces are barely noticeable, which makes them an excellent choice for adults.

Damon Braces are more comfortable, better at fixing severe crowding, and have a lower rate of relapse than traditional metal braces.

What to Expect During Damon Braces Treatment

When you first look at the Damon system, it might look like traditional braces. You will notice that the Damon system uses brackets and wires that are much smaller than conventional braces. The wires are thinner as well. Also, Damon Braces employ a passive brace system. Damon Braces use o-rings made of elastic to keep the brackets and wires in place. The wires used in the Damon system aren't fixed either. Instead, they slide along the brackets, which makes Damon Braces more flexible. However, the braces aren't so adjustable that the wires slide too much because then your teeth wouldn't be fixed.

We start the Damon system with skinny wires so that your mouth has a chance to get used to the braces. The further along you are with your treatment, the heavier the wires get. You will have the most substantial wires at the end of your treatment.

Life with Damon Braces: Care and Maintenance

Maintaining good oral hygiene with Damon Braces is easier than with traditional ceramic braces but there are still some changes that need to be made to your usual routine to accommodate the oral appliance.

You want to ensure you brush underneath the wire, to reach the enamel that is more difficult to get to, and to brush carefully around the brackets where plaque is likely to collect. An interdental brush can help ensure the proper cleaning between the teeth, as well as any other parts of the enamel you find difficult to access. Our orthodontist can give helpful tips if you are struggling to brush your teeth properly.
