Clear Ceramic Braces

Side view of woman's smile with ceramic braces on her teethThe biggest concern that patients have when they need orthodontic treatment is how the braces will ultimately look on their teeth. Many people are worried about losing their confidence and being unable to smile as openly as they want to because of the appearance of metal braces. Therefore, some patients prefer clear ceramic braces. Functionally, there is no difference between the two types of braces.

Clear Ceramic Braces vs Metal Braces

Clear ceramic braces are either clear or tooth-colored. They also have clear rubber components, which are also difficult to notice. While clear ceramic braces are not completely invisible, they are less obvious than metal ones. This is one of the biggest reasons why people prefer clear ceramic braces.

Another reason why some patients prefer clear ceramic braces is because they are not as harsh on the mouth as metal braces. Metal braces do not have sharp edges, but the metal is harder than the ceramic and rubber combination used in clear ceramic braces. Sometimes, the metal braces are too harsh on a person’s mouth when worn for a long time. On the other hand, clear ceramic braces are much softer and have less of a chance of them hurting the mouth than metal braces.

Metal braces are less expensive than clear ceramic braces, however. Both of the appliances perform the same function, so if the patient is looking for cost-effectiveness, they will pick metal braces.

Metal braces are also much more durable than clear ceramic braces. If the teeth are severely crowded or maloccluded, clear ceramic braces might buckle under the immense pressure of the wires and other appliances used to align the teeth.

At our clinic, our experienced orthodontist will conduct a thorough examination of the patient, after which they will discuss with the patient which option suits them better. Only after a proper consultation will the doctors determine which types of braces are better for the patient in question.

Concerns with Clear Ceramic Braces

Clear ceramic braces have their advantages, but there are a few concerns that the patients might have to deal with as well.

The size of clear ceramic braces is generally bigger than that of metal braces. So even though they are visually harder to notice, they are easier to notice for the patient who is wearing them.

Other than that, the rubber parts of the clear ceramic braces can get stained very easily. The staining causes the rubber to become yellow, which can look unflattering. And consequently, the discolored rubber often stains the teeth of the patient as well. These stains are removed with the help of scaling during or after the procedure.
