Should You Opt for Lingual Braces If You Want to Keep Them Unseen?

Lingual braces on dental mirror inside a woman’s mouthBraces are a great way to straighten teeth and fix a wide variety of dental issues, including overbites, underbites, gaps between teeth, open bites, overcrowding, and more. However, many people who require braces, especially adults, do not like the look of traditional metal braces. Lingual braces are an alternative to traditional braces that are much more discreet, but offer many of the same benefits. Read on to learn more.

What Are Lingual Braces?

Like traditional braces, lingual braces feature metal brackets and wires that are affixed to your teeth. But instead of being placed on the front of your teeth, lingual braces sit on the back of your teeth, facing your tongue. Lingual braces are used to treat many of the same dental issues as traditional (buccal) braces.

Advantages of Lingual Braces

Since lingual braces are placed on the back of your teeth, they are virtually invisible, making them an attractive option for adults who would otherwise worry about wearing braces in social and professional settings. Teenagers might also prefer lingual braces over traditional braces for this same reason. Lingual braces are highly effective at correcting various dental issues. They also will not result in noticeable discoloration like traditional braces would, since the brackets are on the back of your teeth.

Disadvantages of Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are not right for everyone. If you have a severe overbite, lingual braces may not work for you because brackets behind your teeth have a greater risk of detaching. Lingual braces might feel unusual and cause speech issues such as lisping at first – however, this would only be temporary while you get accustomed to speaking with your new braces, or until you get them removed. You will have to avoid very crunchy or sticky foods with lingual braces, just like you would with traditional braces, and you need to be extra diligent about your oral hygiene.

If your main concern is keeping your braces unseen, though, then lingual braces may be the right option for you. Call us today to arrange a consultation.
