What Should You Do To Keep Your Retainer And Teeth Clean And In Good Shape?

Your retainer closely interacts with your teeth inside your mouth, and so these substances can build up relatively quickly.

Much like your daily tooth brushing routine, it is equally crucial to clean your retainer daily. The cleaning methods may vary depending on the type of retainer you possess.

Clear Plastic Retainers

Clear plastic retainers, often referred to as Essix retainers, are transparent and form a snug fit over the teeth.

To clean a clear plastic retainer, make sure you rinse it with lukewarm water once you remove it. Gently brush it using a soft toothbrush, mild soap, or a cleaner specifically designed for retainers. Avoid using toothpaste, as it can be abrasive and may lead to scratches. Thoroughly rinse the retainer to ensure there is no residue left behind.

Hawley Retainers

Hawley retainers consist of a plastic base and a metal wire that wraps around the teeth.

You need to gently brush the Hawley retainer using a soft toothbrush and mild soap or a non-abrasive cleaner. After brushing, rinse it thoroughly with lukewarm water.

Avoid using hot water, as it can warp the plastic. Consider using a retainer-specific cleaning solution or soaking it in a denture cleaner as recommended by our orthodontist.

Fixed Retainers

Fixed retainers are wires bonded to the back surfaces of the teeth. They are not removable, making they are more challenging to clean.

Brush thoroughly around the fixed retainer using a soft toothbrush, ensuring you reach all areas. You can use floss threaders, interdental brushes, or a water flosser to clean between the teeth and around the wire.

Regular dental check-ups can help ensure that the fixed retainer is adequately maintained, and any necessary adjustments are made to keep it effective.
