Self-Ligating Braces

Close up of smiling woman with self ligating bracesBraces are commonly used to adjust the gaps between your teeth or align them to remove any crookedness. However, the procedures we recommend may differ from person to person. For some, modern methods of aligning crooked teeth or correcting a bad bite may work better than others.

All braces work with the same traditional method. Small brackets are added to the teeth, which apply pressure through the archwires and bands to push the teeth into position over time. This process may last years or months, depending on the need.

What are Self Ligating Braces?

Unlike the traditional brackets and archwires that need elastic ties to hold them into place, self-ligating braces come with a self-ligating mechanism, which uses brackets or clips to hold the wires together. Unlike traditional ties that need to be tied and adjusted, this mechanism allows the teeth to get adjusted quickly as it performs many of the tightening mechanisms.

At All About Orthodontics, Dr. Raphael Putrus can walk you through the cost, benefits, and feasibility of the procedure. We can tell you whether the procedure suits your oral anatomy by conducting a thorough oral examination.

What’s the Difference?

For self-ligating braces, archwires are secured to the brackets through a system that works itself. You don’t need ligatures to hold the braces in place. The braces work with a sliding mechanism that closes over the brackets and secures them into place.

The braces might require adjustments every once in a while, but they don’t need to be tightened that often. You will still need to come in for your appointments for an examination as you move along the process.

Benefits of Self Ligating Braces

Self-ligating braces are much less uncomfortable than their traditional counterparts. Moreover, you don’t need to visit your orthodontist that often as there are no ligatures to replace. You won’t need to worry about snapping any ligatures and having to go in to get it fixed.

It may also require much less effort to maintain self-ligating braces as there are no ligatures that will trap food, making your teeth look unclean. All you need to do is maintain proper oral hygiene, and you don’t need to worry about the food you eat.

However, remember that replacing these brackets can require a lot of time, so take care of them. Improper usage can lead to an elongated treatment and slow down the process. Moreover, it is important to be prepared for the increased cost as a self-ligating braces procedure can cost much more than traditional braces.
