The Damon system utilizes high-quality materials and a patented technique to ensure your treatment produces superior results. If orthodontic treatment is needed for you or your child, self-ligating braces may be the ideal solution!
What Are Self-Ligating Braces?
Self-ligating braces have been around since the 1930s, but they have only become a popular choice in recent years. Many patients find the advantages of self-ligating braces to be very appealing when compared to traditional braces.
Traditional braces consist of a wire that is held in place by brackets and elastic bands. Throughout treatment, this wire is periodically tightened to apply pressure to the teeth until they move to their proper position. Self-ligating braces utilize a slide mechanism that holds the wire in place, eliminating the need for elastic bands.
Because the wire is held in place with by a spring-loaded clip on each bracket, self-ligating braces do not require any tightening. Instead, the slide mechanism reduces the amount of pressure placed on your teeth, allowing them to move more freely, comfortably, and quickly.
Should You Use Self-Ligating Braces?
As with any good orthodontist, Dr. Raphael Putrus will be able to determine which type of treatment is ideal for you and your family. During your consultation, we will perform a diagnostic exam to determine whether or not you qualify for self-ligating braces. It typically depends on the severity of your malocclusion or misaligned bite. Be sure to ask any questions or voice any concerns so that we can provide you with the ideal solution.
Advantages of Self-Ligating Braces
The self-ligating system has some advantages over conventional braces. Aesthetically speaking, self-ligating braces are less noticeable due to smaller brackets, a thinner wire, and no elastic bands. Even better, the Damon system now comes in clear and tooth-colored versions.
Self-ligating braces also provide great results in less time. Depending on your circumstance, Damon braces could shave several months off of your treatment time, especially if we use active brackets. Active brackets utilize a thicker archwire that applies more pressure on the teeth, moving them more efficiently.
Passive brackets use a smaller archwire, which creates less friction and allows your teeth to move more freely. These types of brackets are often used at the beginning of treatment to reduce discomfort. Even with passive brackets, you could still see treatment times six months shorter than traditional braces.
Because the wire tightens itself, Damon braces also require fewer adjustments. This means your appointments will be faster and fewer in number.
The elimination of elastic bands also results in a much healthier smile after your treatment is complete. Elastic bands and traditional brackets can accumulate bacteria and plaque much easier than the Damon system. With the proper care and maintenance, you can reduce your risk for tooth decay and gum disease during treatment.
